This round tower was built by the Anglo Normans in the 12th century after their conquest of Waterford, replacing the earlier Viking fortification. The artist can trace her family line back to Melaghlin O’ Faoláin (Phelan), Prince of the Desii tribe, a tribe prominent from the 7th century, who defended Waterford against Strongbow in 1170, but was taken prisoner and had his lands confiscated – painted by the artist in 2014
